The first halfshafts I saw were on VW Beetles, swing axles, really, with quite ordinary U-joints at each end. It’s a long way from them to the halfshafts in certain multilink suspension cars now, shafts that often function as a suspension link as well as the conveyor of the driving torque in the car.
