In our first installment of “(Be)deviled Eggs And Other Lunchbox Treats” (October 1997), I recounted how the food service in my college days occasionally came close to exhausting its budget for tasty comestibles before the end of the month. This set the stage for the arrival of the dreaded “cold plate.” Ever since then, I have taken great pains to avoid such nasty fare. Even so, life has sometimes served up some things that have been chillingly reminiscent of that unappetizing dish.
