Way back in the late Neolithic Age, when I was in college, the school’s food service would occasionally come close to exhausting its budget for tasty comestibles before the end of the month, setting the stage for the arrival of the dreaded “cold plate.” Ever since then, I have taken great pains to avoid such nasty fare, but even so, life sometimes serves up something chillingly reminiscent of that unappetizing dish.
