One of the first rules of automotive diagnostics is to check the basics before diving into the more complicated side of computer control systems. Checking timing, ignition, fuel quality, fuel delivery, filters and engine condition are very important basics that have a bearing on how a computer controls various engine systems. Unfortunately, time does not always allow for tests of each of these factors to be conducted in a textbook manner.
