One of the pleasures of running a small business is taking the time to get to know people. One of the more interesting people I’ve had the good fortune to know for many years is my friend Steve the llama farmer. When it’s not the growing season (which is very short in the Puget Sound), you’re likely to find Steve off fishing in Alaska, or taking int he sights of Portugal, or being a Cheesehead in Wisconsin; but during the rest of the year, you’re likely to find him grubbing about on his five-acre organic farm, for which the llamas provide a vital nutrient. If you were to meet him on such an occasion, as he stood smilingly covered with the byproducts of his trade, you’d never guess that he’s one of the most experienced bankers in the state.
