The 4EAT transmission is a four-speed, microprocessor-controlled transmission. We’ll take one apart, and explain how it works.

4EAT FWD and AWD Brake Band Adjustment

This procedure describes access to the 4EAT transmission brake band adjustment for 1990-92 Legacy and SVX models. Refer to the applicable service manual for brake band diagnosis, adjustment specifications and proper bolt torque.

Installation of Speedometer Cable Adapter

Should it become necessary to remove and install the speedometer cable adapter from the transmission on all Legacy and Impreza vehicles equipped with 4EAT, make sure the rubber gasket and the metal flat washer beneath the adapter are also removed.

Reduction/Transfer Gear Phase Matching

When installing or replacing the reduction gears or transfer gears in a 4EAT, the phase matching marks must be aligned.
