Rear Differential Oil Discoloration 2006-2007 Forester & Impreza

If you should observe rear differential oil with a red or rust color in a 2006- 2007 Forester or Impreza, do not change the oil. This may be caused by a red paint product used to check case contact patterns during assembly. Occasionally, too much of the red paint may be used, causing a temporary discoloration of the fluid. The product is compatible with the differential fluid and will not cause any mechanical problems. The fluid will darken to a normal color over time.

Immobilizer Codes

The SOA Technical Helpline receives many requests for immobilizer codes. While the majority of Subaru vehicles are equipped with immobilizer systems, many are not. To minimize wasted time, SOA suggests you research the vehicle to confirm that the vehicle you are working on actually has an immobilizer system before calling the Technical Helpline.

This information can be found in the following two Technicians Reference Booklets:

  • 2005 Immobilizer Component Replacement guide (MSA5P0475C)
  • 2006 Immobilizer Component Replacement guide (MSA5P0575C)

These publications can be located and downloaded directly from the Subaru Technical Information System (STIS) website at http://techinfo.subaru.com. Click on the “Reference Publications” tab on the main screen, select the model year and vehicle model you are working on, and then scroll down to “Training Materials.” Next, select “Technicians Reference Booklets” to download or order hard copies using the MSA number above.

Immobilizer System Teaching Codes

The SOA Technical Helpline has been receiving many calls requesting “Teaching Codes” for reprogramming immobilizer security ID into the vehicle. There are two teaching codes, depending on which Subaru vehicle you are servicing:

  • Legacy/Outback & B9 Tribeca — 3781
  • Impreza & Forester — 3178

Immobilizer System Intermittent No-Start/No-Crank

If you should have a customer complaining of an intermittent no-start/no-crank problem on a Subaru vehicle, check to determine if the vehicle is equipped with an immobilizer system. If so, check the owner’s key ring for an Exxon/Mobil “Speed-Pass” device or any other RF signal-generating device. These devices can interfere with the Subaru signal “signature” of the vehicle’s ignition key, thereby activating the immobilizer system.

STi Models Fuel Recommendation

The Subaru STi engine is designed to operate at maximum performance using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 93 or higher. If 93 octane gasoline is not available in your area, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 may be used without damaging the engine. However, the owner may notice a slight decrease in maximum engine performance while using 91octane fuel. Use of 91 octane fuel will not affect the vehicle’s warranty coverage.

The Latest SOA Service Documents

The following is a list of the latest SOA service documents that have been added to the Subaru Technical Information System website at http://techinfo.subaru.com:

  • Service Bulletin 12-94-06: Loose Door Mirror Screws.
  • Service Program Bulletin WWZ-10: Rear Gate Stays.
